Hello Alexis, how are you?
How's that? Yeah? How's everything with their family?
My family is good, I'm still at my like around my uh, where my internship is. We can't go in but yeah, I decided not to go home until like a lot of this stuff blows over.
Yeah, right, where is your internship at?
So it's in Mass Massachusetts, so like 40 minutes from Boston is like 40 minutes so.
We're not in the heart of the pandemic, so that's, uh.
Gotcha, Alaska, so are you able to do the internship remotely?
So where your family at? Are they closed?
There in there in Florida.
Yeah, so really my mom wanted me to come home too late. No, I don't want to risk like.
A flying over and spread it.
Right, it's actually safer to stay where you are. It's not like traveling.
I guess we should have everybody start chatting so we can test the audio and video.
Oh, I haven't. I'm not in classes right now, but I picked him out for next year so I'm ready for that.
I ready to graduate. I leave us.
God, I'm glad your audio works this time.
Yeah, I found out that uhm, I had to uninstall my driver and envy install it.
Uh, yeah. The other time I had to um, borrow another laptop from my sister, so yeah.
But this time it works, yeah?
Have you guys seen each other since spring break? Probably not so good actually. Got together on this platform.
How's Colten going, Jesse?
Oh, I'm not I don't think till next year so I'm like finishing up my senior year and then I'll do Co turn.
Um, like all of it, 'cause I'm just doing business Analytics.
Yeah, so so bad. How's your Co op right?
Yeah, it's it's OK. Like the whole work from home being is kind of like our rather be in office for sure, but.
Yeah, I'm sure they still haven't heard anything.
I still haven't heard anything about my internship, so.
It is for a summer internship.
Yeah, I I've just heard some people say getting like.
Mine just got late confirmed for virtual in here to.
While waiting for another two panelists.
Now I'm gonna start practicing.
For the slides, it looks like on my side it's like overlapping like the videos, so it's kind of like weird 'cause like it's like shifted for some reason.
Yeah, I wasn't sure why that was so, so I had.
You mean like the like? The green light is either? Why like shows your name?
Not like that. The slides, uhm, the picture of the slides are like.
Overlapping with peoples names like in like the video.
Oh, like with us like our.
Yeah, yeah, for some reason, like the the the slides are like shifted upwards, but I can still see everything so it should be OK.
Oh, OK, I can already see that.
I just wasn't sure if that was like because of the website itself or.
I haven't sizing issues. When I was going out with her stressing out the for the panel with process or Adam sizing issues. Yeah, so like I had like some notes on the side because they didn't have 100% with. It's like glitching out.
Yeah, how tall I presume at our little bit business right now I'm controlling the slides. Maybe like into the show like on my part.
When I do full screen like the full screen button next to the broadcast video, then everything gets fixed.
Can everybody start like?
Just tell us, I guess what have you? Enjoy? Most systems studying at home I guess.
Actually, would you like to start?
Me, uh, well the two weeks before this I was like stressed out with like a ton of different things 'cause I had like through test in a week and then I had four assignments in a week and then all of them this week is like back to normal so it feels like considerably less so like my vote, my motivation went slightly down. But like other than that.
Not having to navigate troids sidewalks has been.
Well then I didn't hear me.
Where is my what answering the question of like? Why have you enjoy most? Isn't starting studying at home?
How to connect? So I just opened up.
Enjoy this break from school. No threat.
Has anyone have UM on line test yet?
What is your time during that time?
I had two where I had to like Sprint in like print and then like finish it and then scan it back in within that amount of time.
Add printer like I don't have a printer in my house.
For me on my TA, she was already running out of inbox space and van Cuba for broke, so she had to tell us to like email it to her Gmail instead, and we had to like use a very specific for a minute, yeah?
OK, thanks for early join for Charles tonight. Um, I guess I just ask that question because I like young probably can connect a little bit. Can everyone hear me OK?
Yeah, it sounds like everybody too, so that's good. So there are currently 2 like Soft Panellus Plaza Mega myself and Teresa.
Is here to help us make sure all the logistics works.
Me personally scroll around to see everybody screaming. Treasure you as well like on your side so that's why we're going to have Jesse to be our moderator for the session. So I got myself down, new to ourselves. We're going to champion if for any questions if need to, and if you are not talking, just please mute yourself so that we don't get the echo. There is a microphone button right beside the broadcast video so you can turn out.
OK, uh, don't beat yourself up videos. I guess people like this year.
Google Slides I think only Jesse has access to that moderator.
Like just how one person to control that so so freeze the system. If one or two people doing it right next door is closed captioning. So all the things we talk about for still have hearing disabilities that they can click on that, I'm sure that's available for students to do it, or we have to do it. But within the last time settings, I don't think you guys will need it. It's mainly for us. I guess I missed Raiders into upload any slides on your left hand side beside the title. There's something called event schedule star. In this time it's counting down.
Right now all the students who registered cannot really see at this point, so we won't go live until exactly 6:00 o'clock. So just see if you could wait for like 10 seconds 10 to 20 seconds for all the time needs to come in that be great. Yeah, because you don't take the traffic.
To like it takes like couple seconds for our students. Really be on in the system.
OK, so I should. I should have been more than that like a couple minutes or just like under a minute.
I also like a minute also be fine. So do you have any suggestion?
You usually about 30 seconds is good. I'm just you'll see that. Do you see the guest tab where it says 9? Right now you'll just see that number go up and it will just keep going up. So I would say give it 30 seconds or so and then go ahead and get started.
Thank you, I think we have 40 something 41 student registered so it won't be as crazy as presentation. So I mean if you can give us like couple seconds I'll be great.
I think on your left hand side on their three boxes, so shows like the guest list as perception issues. All of us know the questions. Boxing middle will show all the questions submitted by the attendees, so only mega project questions on there I think.
Where exactly is the question?
So the so I might have taken the permissions away so only uhm, genuine Megan can see the questions. But once you guys press approve it will move it to the chat box so everyone can see it.
Yeah, so um, I think right now and you can only see the chat box.
Three things I like. Only you would suggest only one person to do it right.
Yeah, I would say either you or Megan, um, or you know just one person to to approve or deny them. Just 'cause I think if two we were doing a test web and are the other day and two people try to approve a question at the same time and sleep kind of like frozan everyone had to refresh their browser.
Um, so I mean, it's it's. We're hoping to have that not happen.
Yeah, yeah, definitely that something went away so I can monitor the questions. Will that be OK or do you want OK?
To approve or deny those questions on there so that will show up on that box. All the student will be able to see it. So Gee will go through those questions one by one since you guys can be muted if you're not talking so I can give you guys maybe like 2 seconds like when you're switching your microphone on off.
Uh, yeah, I think that's pretty self explanatory. The slides.
I don't know if you guys kind of state right now actually.
Touching it once it starts in such as will be on it, but just wanted people see like the order of your self. Introductory introduction slides solo went from generic and then we'll go with like automatic water. So here you're next and then you'll be able to see your slides on there. After that Jessica star like asking this for commonly asked questions, something by the restaurants. So like I love you all the 41 attendees like since all these students will ask.
Questions like when they register for the session last, like, what question would you like to get an answer for? These other former questions on there. So this question we asked first before we start open the floor to everybody. Once you guys answer questions or to slide open for Q&A. So that's the time like I think by then will have some questions show up on the tracks so this will go through them one by one and you guys can start answering it.
So after that I'll make sure that I can hear like watching the time and jump in and give Jesse hazard. Like for the last question so they have time to recover the rest of lies. Next One is RPI campus resources I think was super helpful last year like to have some of the powers that are commenting on these resources from your perspective as a student. So if you ever use like any other resources on campus, just share that would be great and after that we have.
What about upcoming events? So we have planned a lot actually like for this part of the the virtual sceptism stay so definitely.
I can cover this. I'm not sure Jesse will know much details about these two events. I'll cover that and then we'll move to the contact information for, you know, in case of any question they don't get asked today. Yeah, that's pretty much it. Yes, go ahead.
So for the these next three slides like that's like you, you're going to take that over.
Alright, wanna make sure?
Yeah, so that you can after we talk about our account information.
Well, we like watching that for them to like scan those and then you take it down and then if you can just like close the session. Thank everybody not great.
Yeah, I think that's pretty much a Megan. Has I miss anything yet?
I don't think so. Yeah, I think that was pretty much it.
Is everyone signed in with Google Chrome?
What do you mean by signed in? Just like using Google Chrome?
Yeah, yeah yeah, you're using Google. Yeah, that's what I meant.
I think I'm trying to think if there was anything else it might be helpful if we all just like refresh your browser once before we get started. Uhm, just so then like it's like clean like no one else is controlled. The slides or done anything in the chat box or anything. So if we want to do that now and then we can just Jesse can take control and then we can just go from there. Does that work?
Hi, it looks like everyone's back in so I'll mute my I'll stop broadcasting, but I'll be watching throughout the whole thing. So if an admissions related question comes into the question box, I'll type the answer into the chat box and then if you need me to jump in and say anything or do anything, just let me know. But yeah, you guys look like you're all set.
Yeah, thank you goodnight.
Thank you Teresa. I have actually I have a question about since like this session will be recorded right.
OK, um do we know where you gonna be pulling? Like which website?
So what we were doing was we were where we list um everyone like we have a list of all the webinars that they accepted. Students can sign up for. We were just going to take the registration link and instead of saying Register here, we're going to say like, view the web and R here. Once the date pass, so will do that, but the link do you see in the actual like event itself?
Right below uh, where this settings you'll see like settings and then below that you see the slide and then below that it says like access.
Uhm, it's in like that where you were to go to. Like before you press control to get in here.
That's where the recordings like link will be. Sometimes it takes a few days to come.
Sometimes it takes a few days for like the audio to process and all of that, but that's where the link will be and I can just copy and paste and send it to you if you wanted to post it on your website.
OK, we can like email those out to people to the link.
Yeah, it just might take some time to like.
Like process um, like if you like look back in the other one. Let me see the other ones done yet.
Sometimes it like just kind of all up auto or something like pending.
In January, decided that we're not going to be broadcasting ourselves, right?
Italy I just looked back. It looks like the one that we did back on March 26 with uhm.
Other like the all of the computer science students that when the recording is available now.
Yeah, because some student misses session Saturday. The wondering if they can refer back to that, and I know like it has been recorded, just don't know where to direct the students too. So I guess like.
Um, maybe I'd get out of our session if Jessica would just like people know that this session going to be recorded. I think when I end it will provide our kind of information like students now as well. Maybe if they missed the first half or something we can, you know, direct them to the the link later.
Yeah I can. I can send it to you as soon as it's available.
That's all my questions, yeah.
Yeah, I'll stop broadcasting my video, but I'll be here if you need anything.
I'm gonna on broadcast myself too.
I'll be here also if anybody needs anything.
Thank you guys for doing this for us. You're awesome. We miss you.
Jailhouse Corentin life guys.
Why is it really cute? Has a llamas and slots? It's like a crayola one, but it looks really cute like I don't know how kids are able. I think it's sort of older kids 'cause it's hard.
I mean, unless anyone has something more related to the topic.
I need want to distress. I feel like my stress level at home is like this pie.
I've been waking up a lot later than usual.
Do you know the situation with graduation is here to?
That is a celebration set to happen at some point.
Did you guys see all like the UM, zoom means?
This your your microphone's a little muffled.
It's OK, the volume just a little low. If you have another pair of headphones maybe.
Yeah my mom look high school teacher so she's having fun.
You can have fun zoom with students.
All of my sisters left lessons are all like recorded, so it's kinda weird. It's not like she even sees like the teacher like live or anything.
I saw a tick tock there a professor like recorded a lecture just like OK. Can anyone tell oh never mind, this is a recording, it's like well if you guys were here nobody would answer and this is what it would be.
My sister is still in high school, but she's ready taking like Biochem and like uhm what you call it? Uh, like the matrix algebra stuff, kind of that like that kind of stuff and I'm just like.
Tell me what they think you online right now.
Can you try to talk a little bit?
I think you don't you meet yourself.
I don't know if you can hear us.
I think he's trying to pair headphones maybe?
You can refresh your page.
The 2nd way to end out freshman year.
It's interesting for sure doing data structures mentoring is rough.
Hi, how do we? How are they doing that?
You call up the students individually and have them screen share so.
I wasn't trying to talk again.
I don't think the headphones are connecting, so go without.
Yeah, we can hear you, so that's fine.
Yeah, this is better than before.
Oh, just say like I guess for some students, if they have trouble seeing any videos or hearing us, just have them to like refresh their page. I guess we can remind people before it really started.
OK so it has not like difficulty with Chuck session on Saturday so I have to do that.
Well, the students be sharing video 2 or an out.
No, we Galaxy they can't see us like once I yeah.
What time is it might good.
Yes now this is better than.
Oh Jesse, I forgot to mention. So after you introduce yourself, I guess you can let people know like both Megan myself out here and we can introduce ourselves.
Did you mute yourself? I cannot hear you. Oh, OK. OK, OK, that's good awesome.
Oh all like wait 30 seconds for them to all come in. I'll say like welcome. This is the women in computer science seminar all like briefly introduce myself 'cause there's a slide on me later and then I'll have you guys. I'll say like this is being recorded. You can access it later.
Are you also mentioned if you were having trouble seeing all the speakers so maybe scroll? I'm not sure if well like actually effect on their screen and then I'll move it on to you. Two guys. OK, sounds good.
Your voice a little bit like fading out a little bit if you're just like speak a little louder, I'll be great. I don't think the audio has a issue by just yeah.
Wow, I'm trying like really hard for all this like in some like and I like talk or anything like that. Just like really scary.
When is wrestling on a box of Cheerios an matzos?

Thank you all for joining our Women in Computer Science Webinar! If you have any issues connecting try refreshing your page using Chrome as your web browser and make sure your speakers are on.
OK everyone, hi, welcome to the women in computer science webinar. My name is Jesse. I'm gonna be the moderate are for this evening, um, so I'll tell you more about myself later. Some housekeeping things, first one. This is being recorded. You'll be able to access this presentation later, and two. We have Megan Potter and John use out. Also joining us today.
Do you guys like to introduce yourselves?
Hi everyone, my name is Megan Potter. I'm also a student services administrator in the computer science Department, uh manoa, provided by using another student services support to our CS majors and we're really excited for this panel tonight. And like Jen, You said, we're hoping to see you on campus in the fall.
Great so if at any point you can't see a speaker, I would suggest this like scrolling their screen left to right to be able to see just speaking right now. So with that we're going to start this off by going through who's on this panel right now.
I'm a computer science major and I'm a freshman this year. I'm part of AC MW. As one of our freshmen representatives, as well as I'm go to sisters every week, and I know a lot about that. I'm from Taos NM and I have a fish named Kiki bubbles.
Great, can you guys hear me still?
Alright, I'm having a little bit of trouble moving slides. Junior, could you switch the next slide?
Alright, I'm gonna I'm going to refresh my page I think might help.
Hello Hi Alright so hopefully I can go ahead and control the slides now. Great hurt the.
Oh, I'm sorry, could you guys? I'll hear me.
Sorry I had to refresh my page 2. Oh really, everybody did OK.
OK, let's restart. Sorry about that.
Should we? Should we start from her to or gini?
Yeah, I think they were like way too many people or something.
Let's start from today. Please are you able to control it or you want me to do that? OK, sounds good. Thank you.
I'm a computer science major freshman this year, and I'm part of AC MW as the freshman representative as well as sisters, and I'm from Taos, NM and I have a fish named Kiki bubbles.

we can hear you still
So I'm I'm here to Cabo for here. I am a computer science in psychological science, dual major. I'm a senior graduating spring 2020 apart of UPN, currently serving as president. I also a member at ACM W in shape and regular attendee at sisters. My hometown is Tijuana, New Mexico, and fun. Fact is, I've got my hot her over 5 different colors during college.
Hi, I'm Alexandra uhm, I'm a computer science and mathematics dual major. Uhm, I'm a sophomore. A class of 2022. Uhm my hometown is Morganville, New Jersey.
And uhm, so some student organizations I'm in is, uh, so I'm president of Hacker P Uhm, I'm executive director of graduate success for red and White, which is the student alumni organization. I'm president of a WM which is the Association of women in mathematics, an mentorship program chair of ACM W an. I'm.
A regular member of UP and WC S which is otherwise known as sister's. A fun fact is that I saying at Radio City Music Hall for Christmas spectacular.
Sing show with a Concordia Youth Chorale a couple of years ago, um, if you're interested, that video is on YouTube, you'll probably find me if you Google search it.
Really cool alright? So Alexis.
Hi everyone, I'm Alexis Joseph, my majors, Computer Science, an information technology and web science, but a mouthful. So I'm a rising senior. I'll be graduating with the class of 2021, so I'm apart of ACM W which is our Association for computing, machining, woman coding, community an RPI's best dance group RV. I eighth wonder my hometown is White Springs, FL. An my fun fact is, I lived in nine different States and one different country.
Alright, so on to me. Hi my name is Jesse Owens. I am a computer science business and management Wolf major at RPI i'ma current senior going to be graduating in May and then I'll be doing my code term in this list.
So I'm the chair of ACM W, which I guess is the women in computing club. By now my hometown is in Nyack, NY. Outside of New York City. The best place to be right now and then. Fun fact is I actually didn't know any coding before taking CS1.
Hi everyone, my name is Ishita. I am a computer science and mathematics jewel major RP. I'm currently a junior class of 2021. Like Jesse, I'm also doing couture but I'm doing my code term in computer science from parsippany, NJ. I'm part of a CMW oh and I forgot to put you pee on the slide and a fun fact about me is that I can make arguably the best Mac and cheese in the world.
I know it's a. It's a big thing.
That's a bold claim, so we're going to move on to common questions. So basically, what's going to happen is I'm going to go through these and then you guys, the audience can submit your own questions to administrators. They'll go ahead and prove them, and I'll just start asking. So the first question to our art students is, what did you guys do for your arch semester and has it helped you?
Get a job or maybe Jane valuable experience.
Alright, I guess start off with this one, so uhm, I was a part of the class that was the first you have art as a requirement for graduation. So what we pretty much did is you have your regular so well you have a this a slimmer choice of classes that you pick out for December. You take those and then you have a chance to do semester away. Currently right now I'm doing it internship. I've been doing it this whole time over the spring semester.
Yeah you can like pretty much to use whatever semester you want. Spring fall. Do internship research. Uhm, do your own personal project or study abroad. Um, even though we can't do that right now. But it's a good opportunity.
Gauri Sarin
06:09:29 PM
what is an arch semester?
I also did arch with Alexis and I'm also currently not at school and I'm working a man. I thought it was really nice to be able to have like 8 months off of work 'cause everyone does internships in the summer, but working when everyone else is working and when the companies you're working at are also there's more people that are full time workers rather than being forced into an intern program was useful if you ask me.
Real quick Ishida. Could you explain what an art semester is?
Oh yeah, sure, uhm so RPI has this relatively knew program. Last year was inaugural year, where you have during the first semester of your junior year you're actually at school during the summer. So that means that one semester after your sophomore year going to be at school. So you're not going to have the summer after sophomore year off, but then after that, either in the spring or the fall, you pick and then you talk to the school about it.
You take that semester off. It's similar to Co op programs with northeastern and I want to say there's some other schools that do it, but the goal is is that you've got semester for personal development. Whether you want that to be a job or studying abroad, or just doing some of your own projects is up to it.
Perfect, OK uhm, so moving on to the next question, what?
Are the classes generally taken in this major? How easy is this major two combined with another, uhm? I'm just going to start this of-. Uhm so you have a basic template. Uhm, you guys can start off as either concept one or go straight into data structures. I'll have other students talk about that class and then yeah, you guys have basic core like compsci requirements. You have comp sci electives that you have to take after like a basic.
Work classes in those electives have to really kind of fit in one of.
Three concentrations, uhm? And so. How easy is assisted combined with another major? It really depends on what major choosing I'm business and management, so there's no overlap really in a classes. But I came in with a PS so I was still able to graduate in four years.
Anyone else want to take this over?
Sure, I can talk a little bit about this. Uhm, so I am a dual computer psychological science. I didn't come in with the I came in with 12 IB credits but I wasn't able to apply them until a little bit later on. So essentially came in with a fresh slate and both of the programs are pretty flexible. So if you look at the computer science curriculum compared to for example like a bio medical engineering degree perhaps, or maybe physics, even you'll see that we have a lot more free electives.

If I was admitted as an ITWS major and I want to switch to CS if I enter RPI this year, what do I have to do/ where can I change my major?
Jillian Milton
06:12:38 PM
What kinds of artificial intelligence courses does RPI offer?
In major template. Then it's just quite nice if you want to specialize in something or if you want to pick up a dual major. In my case Psychological Sciences. A couple major as well, so I will to combine the two. Even actually might have a minor. I have to check with the registrar about that. I think I also completed a minor in science and Technology Studies 'cause I did take for classes in the area. So yeah, it's pretty much. It's pretty flexible with some duels. However there are some other measures that are harder to deal with, so it could be signed with dry I would say.
It's pretty, it's pretty flexible degree curriculum and you can really do you believe that?
Yeah, just taking over a little bit up. Um, hold up there. We have a question about somebody was admitted as a it WS major an wanted to. Maybe switch into CS. That person asked what the procedure was. So basically what happens is you have to take data structures and there's a GPA requirement with that. So I think you have to get to be in data structure is or they give you another shot and just have a 30 average.
Among all your CSS classes and then you go in and talk to either begin jogu.
About switching in uhm and then and then, just like a couple signatures from there.
Not be definitely 3 hours, yeah.
And then another question that we got was what kinds of artificial intelligent courses does RPI have to offer. So if anybody wants to speak on that?
So I'm taking intro to AI. Right now. It's just like the beginning, like basics part. So um, it's really fun. Um, it's a lot of Pac-Man projects. And then later on they have like the machine learning courses as well, but I haven't taken those yet.
I can also speak to that a little, um, in AI is like kind of broad, so there is one of the four concentrations that Jesse mentioned that you can major in is AI, so I'd say there's almost like 20 classes in that field. Some that I can remember off the top of my head, a database, systems machine learning, and data data mining. Intro to AI.

http://catalog.rpi.edu/
Let me think there's a couple and I can put a link in the chat to a whole course catalog which has all the whole like combined list of all the courses. But there's definitely I would say at least 15 to 20 different courses that you can take. And if you're interested you can always do like to Professor and do research most of the time they're more than happy to figure something out work with your interests.
Yeah, so um, we had John. You just linked to the course catalog and those should list the artificial intelligence courses.
Um, anyone else want to speak to yeah?
Can I time in a bit? I'm so In addition to the courses offered by the computer Science Department, if you're also interested in other aspects of the artificial intelligence, not just the computation, you could also take coursework in either like their math or in cognitive science. So it's really something that is strong on campus in a lot of these courses are also cross tested with the CS Department. Also, just checking out the courses.
But I think some more biological effective behind.
Alright, cool anyone else before I move on to the next question.
No. OK, uhm so. Are there any mentor ship programs available to female computer science students? Funny you should ask that AC MW does provide a mentor ship program. We just completed our pilot year this year than it was. You know, I think it was exist success we have. Alex is our current mentor ship program chair. But before that rule wasn't even created. We had a cheetah.

Who kind of went to administration and got the ball rolling on that? So do either of you guys want to talk about the program and then we have Jeanette who was a mentee this year. So why don't we move to shita to explain with arrow gram is?
All right, so, uh, I had it came up with the idea or like I was talking to friends about it in the.
I threw my years here in the past like 2 1/2 years at least when I started the program, I felt that I met so many amazing women at RPI that we're doing so many interesting things, but it was always through like talking to people and it took more time than I would have liked it too. And really, really, the motivation was to get incoming freshmen. The connections that I have now after spending three years at RPI as soon as possible and let them know that they're not alone. We did a bunch of things with this.
The goal of the program is to make sure that every girl that participates in the program has a an advisor or mentor that's older than them. So like maybe one of us is upperclassmen, but they also have people to talk to that are going through the same things as them. So like data structures help, it's really to create a community into Foster a spirit Jamaican talk about how she felt during during that time.
Yeah, definitely. It was really great. Having someone who is older who had been in RPI for awhile to be able to ask questions about different classes and get advice on how to do certain things as well as like you got to meet a lot of people like right off the bat and I met some of my closest friends at the mentor ship stuff so.
Yeah, um, so if you guys are interested in joining that, um, ACM W will be sending out information later on. We're going to try to get matches in before the first student orientation this year so we can.

This has a breakdown of the concentrations and classes offered in each concentration
People can ask their mentors about you know what classes to sign up for. So just keep an eye on that. In your email. One other mentor ship program I want to mention is the WMP program. Can anyone speak to that?
I was also part of it. Uhm so I.
I I joined us, I'm NT and that's where I found my, uh, first.
Mentor in RPI. Uhm, she helped me a lot by um, showing me all of like campus before classes started. Uhm, so that definitely helped because I was not lost at all like first day in.
And I continued as a mentor.
For that the following year.
So first some clarification. That mentorship program that we just mentioned isn't really associated with any clubs, so it's like all these different majors together and then AC MW is really geared towards computer science.
I was also going to chime in about the The Rensselaer Women's mentor program, so I had a so I've been a mentor for both the AC and W mentoring program and also the WMP so through WMP. As Jesse mentioned, there are a lot of different majors so my men see through. There were actually pretty close which is really nice user via mean. She started out as bio's and switch it to be me so it's kind of really can't help her with any more dynamic side of things however like.
Together in line like it's still worthwhile, but if you kind of want someone to get you know more in Department, definitely either it's not like you meet with him every week or something unless you want you so definitely hot teas through a program, but we still have to touch on these so I feel like they've.

I have a lot of us only meant for the old fashioned, but if I was up.
Great, um, so any last thoughts before I move on to the next question?
No OK, So what are your favorite and least favorite things about RPI? So why don't we just go down the line starting with Jeanette?
Are some of my favorite thing about RPI so far is the sum of the classes that I've taken. I grew up in a place where computer science wasn't really like a big thing, so getting to take computer science classes and meet other girls who are also interested in computer science was really great.

The chat box doesn't allow us to send the URL link. I‘ll send it to all of you later through email sorry
And RPI is on top of the Hill, so there is a lot of walking and a lot of stairs. Just warning you so that one's least favorite thing.
Yes, definitely, um can attest to that. Uhm, so my favorite thing about RPI is.
All the opportunities I was rewarded, um by being a student here and one of my least favorite things about RPI is probably the cold. I'm just not like I much rather be really hot then really cold and it gets kind of cold here.
Yeah, so I think my favorite thing is kind of a camaraderie in general. Throughout the students, I found that it's like a very. It's a healthy balance between like pretty challenging academics, but I like it's been very rare that I encounter someone that isn't willing to help out. It's pretty collaborative environment, like already is super popular. Like if anyone is running into an issue there, you'll see students pop up even if you don't know the person. So I like that it's like you don't have to.
And I know, at least for things I guess on my first winter from the other, so I didn't work.
Alright, Yeah, so um, if you are, if you guys weren't able to visit campus, uhm?
In one of the buildings in most eaten, there is a computer science lounge that has like couches and tables and whiteboards and TV screens on office. Hours are frequently help there. I know AC, MW and sisters is held there at least sometimes, and then, um, that's a great. It's a great space, and then quality is dorm. That's like slightly off campus. It's like, right on Hoosick St, which is the street where Rite Aid is.
Yeah, could be. Could be kind of a hike I I lived in stacks which is farther up off campus.
So my favorite thing that a bunch of people have already touchdown is definitely the community. So everyone talked about people. I would also extend that to professors and administrators. I have never like some of the teachers seem a little scary, but I've never really met a professor that if you went up to them and you ask for help, they weren't available during office hours. And then of course you have Megan and John. You are always going out of their way to like make things easier. I've never felt left like left.
Out and dry. Even though classes get hard and then always upperclassmen. I know her tail is like always there to help me. When I was a freshman, so people definitely my favorite thing I least favorite thing has to be the food. I'm a vegetarian. So uh, the Food and Commons got really old really quick freshman year, but it's OK.
Yeah, I totally feel you on the people of saying um professors, I'm just going up to them after class and you know, like showing interest in their research, they really appreciate the initiative. So I definitely agree about the approach ability and I think inside like networking with other students is like Super Easy and super useful. So I totally agree with you on that. And also yeah, Sodexo food. It's cool, it's fine.
They did the model it though, so it's a little bit better.
Yeah, I was told it's more about presentation than like quality though. Who knows? I haven't been back there. I haven't been back there, so.
You can make your own past, uh, so that helps.
Alright, so moving on to Alexis.
Hey so I guess my favorite would be like the chances you get to apply the skills that you learn 'cause we have so many late clubs on campus like coding community you can go out in the community at each other like high schoolers or middle schoolers how to code. Or you can go to Arco switches like you can create a open source project and get other students and work on it and create something huge. There's been like hackathons or people have made some amazing stuff.
And then like you can just pretty much go out and do anything. They even have like competitions where you can pitch an idea, create it in RPI, will fund it for you. So those type of opportunities and research research is really big. At RPI campus you can always find a professor who's looking for undergraduate research student to join their project and it's never been like a huge issue. Even if you're a freshman. I know there's a couple projects that take them and I was.
Like other people said, I'm from Florida. I hate the cold, so the cold every year. Once winter hits, I'm just nowhere to be found, so I would say that's the least favorite thing.
OK cool, so um that even said Buddy has anything else to say before I move on to the next slide.
No OK, great. So now is our open Q&A.

06:29:10 PM
How does RPI as a school help students get internships, are there opportunities to apply for internships directly from school?
This is the time to go ahead and ask your questions come to us.
If you are just joining us or joined us late, um, just a reminder that.
There is recording of this that will be released, I think a couple days after till after this presentation. So you would feel free to go back and listen to the beginning. We just went over who we are as panelists. And yeah, that's about it.
Gauri Sarin
06:29:53 PM
what are the four concentrations ?
Alright, well we're waiting for UM.
Questions to come in. I guess a question that I want to know is maybe speak about the presence of the gender gap. I like. Do you guys feel it in your classes and your social life?
Anushka Desai
06:33:04 PM
Approximatly how many hours you have to study for CS in a day?
Kirstin Hayduchok
06:33:10 PM
What is the social life like at RPI?
Yeah, um, and then I think when you move on to like your social scenes, you'll find the ratio battle balances out a lot more.

06:33:31 PM
i think i heard that the cs course is in python. what did taking that class look like? also, what do you learn in data structures? (and what does that look like?)
Makenna Noel
06:33:38 PM
When exactly is a student qualified for a co-op? What is the experience like?
In during freshman year, it's more projects that you're going to be spending your time on an like tests. Yeah, you gotta study for it, but if you're doing like the projects that they give you for classes, you're gonna do well and you're going to understand the stuff. So for data structures, you spend a good amount of time working on things and like learning the stuff.
Like some people talked about the average of like 10 hours a week. But it depends on how you feel about the stuff and how you feel about coding and C++ and stuff like that.
Definitely varies a lot, especially depending on how much coding you're coming into a RP with. So I came in with no coding. I would probably spend like 20 to 40 hours on each will work like minimum, uh in data structures, so and then as I kind of like gotten the hang of it, there's a learning curve coding I had to put in like less time to learn the concepts, but I mean, you're still like.
It still can be time consuming. I mean, as with any major really here at RPI.
On data structures for people who don't know is a class that comes after CS one, so it's your typically the second semester freshman year class. It's probably one of the hardest classes at RPI, but it is also one of the most rewarding classes at RPI. You dedicate a lot of time to it during that semester, but you come out at least. Personally, I came out feeling as if I've learned more than I'd ever learn in a three month period in my life, so I would recommend it, but it is.
A lot of work, and there's no sugar coating.
Yeah, I'm and you also have the choice when you're coming in as a CS freshman, you have the choice to take. Either go into data structures right away, or it takes the S1 and then go into data structures. So if you're like I don't know if I'm ready yet, I'm going to like build my skill, build my problem solving skills, and no need to stress you got CS1 first as a choice.
Anybody else Wanna speak to workload Alexis?
Yeah, so why we're kind of making data structures sound a little bit scary. There is so many resources to get help. We have so many office hours with a lack or what your TA you can go in there and just sit for like I think they have like late night office hours at this point now. So if you're like working on it later on the grind, sit their work. Ask questions as you go.
It definitely makes a easier. There's always inform somebody's at answering questions for you, so it's not like a thing of like, Oh, you're pushed out there an you just on your own. There's definitely a lot of help you can get in with your peers to you as we talked about earlier, everybody is about collaboration. So when you can sit down and talk about, oh, how somebody do this problem. Of course you don't cheat, but like, just talk about how you walk through it. In a lot of times, that helps you get through it.
There's definitely a ton of office hours, even you know in our, like weird virtual world. There's still office hours going on, so you know you'll get a lot of help in almost every CS class. There's just a ton of office hours for you to attend.
Jessica, I yeah go ahead. Can I talked about like the UM data structure and CS 1 Coors real quick? Yeah, so about half of our incoming class takes CS one or the other half take data structures, but always have like up on tool. I think the first exam to fall back to CS1 if you start from this structures. So that has been really helpful for law students. So you just work with our instructor. Let them know that you like to fall back. So I hope that.
There's the rumor of data structure. Want cereal way to sign up for this course. If you have trouble, you can always like drawback to CS1. It should not prevent you from like proceeding and continuing that course.

What language of code is commonly used at RPI?
Trisha Chittu
06:38:35 PM
Could you speak towards safety on and off campus?
The last thing on RPI's mind is so leave anyone behind, so moving on what is social life like at RPI?
Anyone can go in if they want to come, but I say is that it's pretty much what you make of it. If you are interested in going out and being social, then there are plenty of opportunities to do that. If you're more someone that wants to set in their room and play video games, there's also plenty of opportunities to do that.
I like personally I have not found like I heard like rumors about how like no one talk to each other. The social life was abysmal. I have not found that to be the case. Um, like I like plenty of friends, we do things.
Maria Roberts
06:39:31 PM
Can any of you talk about your NRB experience? This is Maria from FYE full disclosure :)
But it's very much what you make of it. An I I can also emphasize the fact that you will never feel pressured to like. I know, certain schools are party schools. You never feel pressured to party. If that's not what you're interested in your free too.
Be as social or antisocial as you want.
Janay do you want to speak to maybe how you made friends at RPI?
So joining clubs was a big way of making friends and like talking to people in class is a clubs. You got to get like see other people with the same interests as you and find out what they were doing and meet up with who they were already talking to. You got to meet a lot of people that way that was really a good way to start out. Getting to know people.
No, there's a tight clubs. I just found out the treasurer for AC MW is also part of the juggling club. Like there's just a wide variety to choose from. Her thought you had your hand raised.
Yeah, so something I felt like pretty pronounced ERP eyes everyone kind of just not to using to use jensi vocabulary. Everyone is kind of just driving. You can kind of just do your own thing. I remember I freshman year I was in Mason Hall. My floor specifically had like the highest party incident count I remember but like the person with the loudest craziest room they got caught for like the most often was also like friends with like the shy kid that had no interest in it.
If you like just told me it's like the neighbors didn't want it to be allowed, so I felt like it's pretty funny 'cause you can be like buddies with people that are like an absolutely awful fun and like 7 friends over all the time. But it also like studies with these are over there. Somebody pretty pronounced something like form during class ever been sitting in a data structure and there was like a little group of choice. Little group of us together and there was a group of like competitive gamers and they were all like buddies over there. Like class questions will be discussing intelligence. People still ask around.
And they were all exceedingly kind of just liked the idea of the other person. Existing differently, wasn't like owners are like you like party kids like it was pretty. It kind of everyone has the idea. Yeah, I kind of live my life like I do and other people live their lives like you do you become upper class and just kind of like you?
Kind of like that come Rodery one of you guys was mentioning earlier, maybe ashita uhm, OK.
Any any other thoughts on social life?
So for me, um, last last year when I was a freshman, I really liked about a freshman year is that we were all on the same Hill. So, um, that definitely help with initially meeting people. Uhm, I was part of Warren Hall, so that has like a pool table, foosball table, and I know a couple other dorms have like ping pong tables and such.
Um, it was really funny 'cause of people since we're so close by. They were like sneak into other peoples like um, freshman dorm. So like I would be in Warren Hall Lounge and I just see people who are not in Warren Hall just playing pool.
I would also sneak into Barton how to meet my friends to uhm, but having everyone like close by definitely helped. Meeting people initially an I still talk to all those people from.
Yeah, all of my closest friends are found my freshman dorm. Uhm, OK, so I just want to move on 'cause we have a fair amount of questions coming in. The next question is what language of code is commonly used at RPI just jumping in real quick? I don't think like anyone language that's like used most often. Maybe Python And like see this one. I'll go like injured at AI but it really depends on the courses you take. They really like our pipes curriculum really tries to get you to like.
Learn a little bit of a lot of languages and then as you move through your concentration like you'll usually pick like a passwords like a particular language. Anyone else?
So for the first couple of semesters, I feel like we switched a language like almost every semester 'cause I started with a C++ and data structures, and then we had C for Comp, Org and then P soft was like Java and.
I'll go, we did a little bit of Python And then.
It really like varies for like each of the classes? Uhm, yeah.
Yeah, so a lot of classes once you get to upper level courses they let you pick whatever language you want so they really got opportunity. Learn like more of the modern languages that companies are looking for an intern ships. So for example, if like urine, software documentation design, So what you do there, you pick up project and they say go for it once they approve it just go for any language. That's what kind of makes RPI kinda unique in that sense. 'cause I know like a lot of other schools stick to one or two languages.
RPI really wants you to like. Branch out and try new technologies, which is very important for going out in the real world.
Yeah, so to sum up where you're learning, a lot of different languages and if you want to hone in on one, there's definitely opportunities to do so.
Uhm, OK, so moving on, could you speak towards safety on an off campus? Uhm, so I'm just going to start this off. I live off campus. My junior and senior year about like a couple blocks up. I've always felt like pretty safe. Um, like I've kind of gone. Walked from the library back home at like three o'clock in the morning, a fair amount of times, but I also recognize that.
This Troy is like a city. It's urbanizes like not just RPI kids living like off campus. So if you wanna use some St smarts you know.
And so for me I live in Colonie so I sometimes would head back late after studying but I always saw like pub safety doing their rounds right like by colonies. So like that definitely helped. And also if you're worried about safety, there is like 24 escort.
Service with like public safety. So you could just call them and they'll drive you back. And there's also like safe ride after certain time, so both of those services help you get back to your dorm safely. If you ever worried.
Yeah, safe ride is really cool. I think it opens like 7. It goes to like 3:00 AM an like you can get from most. I think it's like within a five mile radius like from campus off campus or off campus campus or like dorms and stuff so I know like I only sorry using that service like last semester ended up like.
For Uber, kind of with students.
It's also student run or student driven.
Yeah, so In addition to so I lived in so I've lived on campus for three years. One year as a Narayan living off campus now, however, my closest living two campuses now, my current off-campus apt I lived in wraps RH PS if you're looking it up wraps B which is it's pretty much like some of the furthest you can get from campus. So yeah walking like 2 and fro like I definitely public safety and privacy here as well and by also ride the bus everywhere. I have a car.
And I'm not drive and I do my friends at in the morning before the students wake up slightly after right? So I mean, I I don't have seem like they have. Question would be like in a bus ride or when it sounds like oh that's happening. However, you can't use it anymore.
Summer and I'm walking around there, which I did sometimes I like once a day. I'd like maybe.
Going to be in the downtown area, like maybe don't lock myself.
Anywhere going more like dense, potentially populated area you want observations. However, like walking back from my apartment to my friends, I never felt anything like Super Sketchy. There's also the shuttle service, which is during the early hours In addition to the time. There's also a very safe.
The inside was a lot, so I just because the generated something work until like three guys in 90 minutes for me to like. I think it's just like a model 2 miles into Miles didn't get this. Will take a bus.
Block often like these, let me say that the controls for excellent also been riding the bus and walking the professional district police in general just fine, but it is not as if you want it longer processing. That is indeed account.
Sorry, can't reach me a little bit because the time limit. Let's take it like last question. I know they're having a lot questions submitted. Really good questions, so let's take like last one. I want to move on to the next couple slides. There's a question like came in I approve like somehow going to show up in the chat box. I think it's really good. How does our Piazza school helps you learn get internships? Are there any opportunity opportunity to apply for internships directly from the school?
I'll start this one if you guys don't mind. So um, through a lot of clubs there are a lot of networking events throughout, like the fall and spring semester, so that's where you can like. Go talk to people face to face as well as the Career Center is called the CPD. That's what everybody calls it around here. They have like different networking events themselves with different recruiters and they have like resume nights where you can go in. Show them your resume, they'll critique it and you can.
So we get from there and then. Or you could settle appointment. Um, they'll give you 30 minutes. You talk about whatever you need to do to get it internship and they'll help you in that way as well. As like we have a huge fall career fair. So many big companies come and want to recruit RPI students as well as the spring career fair. We have another opportunity to try and get an internship so those events are super useful. RPI has been pretty good of like.
Giving holding those type of events and trying to give Steven Cigar Theron advertise themselves.
The charges yes. Department also has scholarships for Grace Hopper for specifically for women and Grace Hopper, which most of you probably don't know is this huge career fair national for women. and I think there's like 20,000 women that go an RPI CS Department. Specifically sponsor is, I think last semester was like 20 women or something along those lines to go.
Yeah, to add on to, uh, the career fair stuff. Um, you should definitely go to the career fairs up for the spring career fair. I I went into the extreme and kinda went all five hour's uhm.
So, uh, that was definitely interesting, but I did get a lot of really good conversations. Um, obviously if you have class that day, um, you don't need to go the full 5 hour's, but I didn't have class that day, so I figured, why not. Uhm, I spoke to a lot of companies and it definitely helps to research ahead of time. And yeah.
OK, just one last thing. Um, a lot of student clubs also host events with companies I remember during my tenure in AC and W we hosted events with Intel with Microsoft, so that's always a good way to network. Can. Often times it will collect resumes at these events and info sessions and programming competitions. That will be all sorts of events. It's kind of bizarre sounding, maybe too high school student. Once you get to college, this will be completely normal. You will show up in Microsoft will give you free pizza and welcoming.
They also great to help myself.
Definitely a Mason. W also has like active membership perks where your resume gets uploaded to our website if you're an active member, which just means you like attended a certain amount of meetings. Uhm, yeah we hold a lot events like IB, MK, Bloomberg.
We also like developed a soft skills so like um and hard skills. So like interview questions. We have an interview question workshop.
Like you know, maybe how to email professor stuff like that.
No OK, uhm so John, you'd do. We want to move on to the next slide.
OK, cool, so I'm going to tell me about this so I put this here and mainly for people to know I know like this good conversation on the cover a lot. Good campus resources so could one of the I guess one of the political comment on your experience without using any of the resources on campus if any.
I can talk about the hub, I know like when I have a scheduling like questions or when it was declaring my CS well 'cause I came in it as a business major or literally just like questions about like anything I school science does have a advising hub that like.
Like their job is to basically just like really help you get to where you need to go. Graduating internship Coop Wise.
So I'll go next. I'm a little bit biased towards the Career Center 'cause I used to be a work study there, but from my experience there is that there's so helpful and what they can do is like if you sit down and schedule appointment and be able to like just say hey I need help trying to get this job. What do I need to do it in my college career? What club should I join? What should I have my resume that stuff really helps you and trying to like apply for internships.
And if you get to know a lot of these counselors. They want the best for you and they try and give you recommendations on. Hey, you should apply for this person. I know their recruiting for this company so try and put your resume through there or go to this event is happening. XY and Z so if you go to a Career Center. They'll help you out. They even give you resume paper an portfolios if you need it for a career fair and they even have like if you don't have clothes for the career fair, they have a whole closet where you can like.
Pick out something. UM, for those career fair days, so is really nice resource.
I can talk about student life. I'm so I work for a rez. Life is a work. Study through my four years which is a part of student life in general. They are the people that you go to. Like if you have to miss a class 'cause you're sick, you will go to the Health Center. But ultimately through student life is where the class beans are. The people that help you get excused absences. You have to miss a class of interview, so it's kind of like the main administrative body that you have to attend to. But there's also.
After you meet with your frosting, just in general as well as the people hub, just see like your program like we were thinking of some stuff. Having difficulty getting any bureaucratic process which a lot of you can usually get your teeth. Or maybe you're sitting in residence life. They can usually help you navigate those things for me completely. Just want to shoot everything.
It's usually the people that you have to do.
This is like Adamic Deans, Encompases Hinson, residence life and Greek life Commons as well. I think they understand life ministry about their bias. Likes is Mississippi, but that's definitely every 2nd.
I can talk about arch if no one else wants to, um, so this summer I did arch, but I'm also on an Excel accelerated schedule an I mentioned before, but I'm also doing coach arm, so I had a couple of I was kind of in a Gray space. As far as my graduation go is how I was graduating with what classes I was graduating, so I was talking to a lot of the people that were handling arch locksmith or over the summer and they were very helpful and like communicating even though they don't always know all the answers.
Since it was the first year everyone was like making sure that I was kept in the loop. Uhm, and we got everything sorted out.
Awesome, I guess I can talk about Department computer science real quick so we talk about the curriculum template. So like all the good information like that will be available online so all the webinars and sessions like virtual accepted students. They recruit recruitment events also available on this website as well. And also like faculty research interests and their bibliography on there like also available so you can check it out when you get a chance, hopefully.
I smoke two or the next slide, so as I said, like we had planned a lot virtual events for everybody and hopefully you guys attended Professor Chuck stored presentation last Saturday as part of the virtual accepted students day. So some of you probably sign into the online queuing system which was developed actually by one of our awesome computer science students. So many were available like.
Immediately after his presentation April 4th by also have provide opportunity for you guys to also sign up through this website and also could be contacted by one of our current CS students and also we have planned or weekly accepted students information session with our current CS faculty members and this session is hold every week. So you can sign up on here as well so if you.
Have your smartphone you answer free ticket out and maybe scan the bar code on here which will direct you to the right place.
I'm going to stay here a little bit so that you can scan it and maybe.
Take the address down or something.
All right, so the next slide I will include both of mega myself kind of information there. So if you have any questions feel free to email us or I don't know if you guys know any of the panelists account information, but if you have any questions specific to.
Like panel is today, feel free to just outside this an answer email. I will connect. You two are awesome Palace today.
I guess Jessica rap up for today.
Thank you guys so much. Stay well.
