And then just keep it like 2 seconds once it gets to 0 or people to sign in, you can see in guests.
Will give everybody a chance to sign on. We see our guest starting to come in. It is now 6:00 PM and we are going to be opening up the arch at Rensselaer webinar for family planning and preparation for the class of 2023. My name is Jay Felder. I am director of the Art Institute transitions here at Reds Lear and I am joined by.
Doctor Tiffany Powerdirector Punch academic programs and a rose, the director of the Center for career professional development and we are indeed excited to have you guys on this webinar tonight, so we want to give everybody a chance to sign on. So I'll wait a few moments. And so while everyone is coming in, I just want to make sure that I say on the web and Rs were getting started to ensure that you all are checking your Institute updates from our president and other Institute leadership.
Regarding any of the planning, any of the concerns regarding a coded 19. If you have any questions about that, there is a link on the regular website where you can look at previous communication sent out to the Institute. An current communications that we are currently looking to make sure that everyone is aware of. So as both are coming in, we hope that you guys can hear us clearly and so it looks like we have everyone pouring in. So I'm going to go ahead and get us started with the art brings a lier.
So the art of Rensselaer is the student experience of robust academic summer semester on campus, and it usually happens for the students after they have their sophomore year. So what we look at it as in terms of the perspective of how it impacts the Institute, is the summer term here and the semester away, which which creates the world away experience so you can see here in this quick graphic that we have it to where students seeking a world away experience during their fall or spring semester after their junior.
Here and what it actually does is prepare students to meet the multifaceted challenges of the 21st century. So the most important thing we want to start with to give you all a glimpse of exactly what the arch is designed to do. What are the intentionality's set forth by our Institute to really guide our practice to really guide our application of how we engage the students at Rensselaer from the beginning of their matriculation through graduation? So the art was developed to be intentionally transformative?
And so we asked ourselves, OK, in what ways are we providing that intentional transformation? So the first thing is the acceleration of immersion in both the academic and professional world. So what actually happens in the summer term is that students are on campus taking their junior level courses, and then that is preceded by a semester away experience where they're actually experiencing some level of Design and a different ways of experiential learning. And so you guys are going to hear a lot more about that as we get.
More into the web and R later in the presentation, and so the next thing is structured academic advising, career counseling and leadership development. These are very very core themes as we begin to explain what the student experience looks like for students and so academic is academic advising is at the core of what we do each year for the students and so his career counseling at every single level of their matriculation at the Institute and so leadership development is that.
Additional component as well that we provide our students at our Archer Center for student leadership and development so unique academic and Co. Curricular experiences is the other piece that students are able to experience based on the design of what we're able to provide for the students in their given terms. So every single summer the unique experience is going to be different and robust and very rigorous for every single code word and so in the past we've done.

Hi Justin, i see your volume is cutting in and out, what browser are you using? This webinar will work best with Chrome. Please let me know if you are still having trouble
Check my trips. We've done different levels of engagement and of course looking at their mental health and physical Wellness as well or round academic classes and such, and so you'll hear a little bit more about that too. So the next thing is the re clustering of the junior year. So re clustering using bad language and terminology. That's basically giving the students a chance to come back together after they've been on campus for two years as freshman or sophomore's, and so they are able to come back together.
To reestablish old bonds, re establish those networking relationships and really get to the arch of the bridge of taking them into that pivotal place of their next junior turn on campus. So more more, more focused and meaningful engagement with the faculty when the students are on campus in the summer term, they actually are the only Colbert on campus and so our fantasy are able to provide a much more intimate connection and relationship with those students inside the classroom and outside of the classroom.

You know they're really not fighting for the attention of their faculty members. They are able to be a little bit more engaged in meaningful conversations, whereas they're not competing for office hours, etc etc. And last, the opportunity for students to engage in self discovery, leading to increase intellectual agility, multi cultural sophistication, and global perspective. And these are the overarching class outcomes that govern our Institute in how everyone division across divisions.
Really do their planning as we prepare for students and so to give you a better look at what the core breakdown actually looks like. So each you do that interest Rensselaer, the general structure if you will, is 4 years to graduation so you have a semester of a semester, them instruction and eight semesters of financial aid, and so in the freshman year. If you notice, you'll see bolded early arched summer because we have some freshmen who come into the Institute.
With a significant amount of AP credits and so they are offered the opportunity to go into. There are summer term early and so from there you have the fall term, spring term or early summer art and it's not. You know, the freshman will continue on with their general reticulation, so that's where most of your students are right now. Most of your students are class of 2023. This was their very, very first semester or year here at Rensselaer, as we're getting ready to finish up the spring term.
And so now we're in that process where we're beginning to gear up for a very, very robust experience for the students in terms of preparation, so the sophomore year is where all the preparation happens getting ready for the junior year before the students take the semester away and then we wrapped it up with the senior year where students will have a false spring and go to graduation or are these students may continue on they may be doing cool terminal degrees.
Or they apply for those those degrees in the junior year or the senior year when they have 90 credits or more and you also have students who continue onto the accelerated PhD program. So those are all some tidbits in terms of what that progression actually looks like from the freshman year to the sophomore year through the junior year where they're actually spending their time off Rensselaer's campus and then the senior year where they wrapped up their time with us. Now you'll note at the bottom where it says.
On campus, housing required and then juniors participate in the following spring semester away. After there are summer term and so it says to know that this is just a general overview because we do have to become a Saint of our architecture students who are at Rensselaer for five years and so for those students instead of them doing it after their second year at the Institute they actually participate in. There are summer term after their third year at the Institute. So for all the parents who have students who are.
Um, in architecture. This year they actually won't go into. There are summer term until after their third year at the Institute, so ideally this is the way you want to look at the planning for your student. And this is just the giving you a general idea. Now I know that a lot of parents begin to ask questions in regards to financial aid, so I want to make sure that I covered that for you as well with a little bit of the financial planning for the large so.
Federal New York State in RPI aid is available at the same level during the summer session if they're enrolled full-time. So when we say full-time equivalency, that means 12 credit hours or more. Answer all those students in the summer term. They do receive their financial aid package. That is one of our previously asked questions. That's one of our FAQ is what does that summer term package look like for our students? So the summer term does count as one.
Of the semesters of aid for students.
And so basically what happens is that once the student goes on their semester away, that is the semester that they are not paying tuition to the Institute. So the summer term does count as one of their semesters of eligibility. Now the summer term for our academic school year is the beginning, so you see, we put an example there. If you are planning to be enrolled for summer 2020, then you want to make sure that your summer fasa is filled out the December before.

Hi Justin, glad it is working better!
So these are all dates that we provide to the students in the sophomore year and prior to the sophomore year at their very important arch discovering day that takes place the day before their classes begin. So for your students in the class of 2023, they will be coming back to campus in August by August 29th, and so there are's Discovery Day is scheduled for August 30th, 2020.
And so this is where the students will begin to find out more about the financial planning piece, more about their academic peas. A more about the career, services and career development piece, as well as how to go about their sophomore year in securing positions, etc. Employer timelines, everything that is important for the students to know prior to their arch summer term. So this is just a quick snapshot to show you that all students receive their financial aid added there. Going into there are summer term.
Now I also placed the financial aid contact here as well because we have a very unique design in our financial aid office where they have dispersed students by last name. And so you have representatives there who will build those relationships with the students as they are planning and they will most likely be in touch with that same counselor as far as planning for the rest of their matriculation. So it is the contact information there in Academy.
Call in there on the second level so you can also look at the admissions that archive.edu/aid. That also gives you a sense of what students can expect from a financial perspective of what they'll be required to do in terms of March R versus Rs office is actually also very very very resourceful and making sure that our students are prepared for their upcoming us some return so that their email address and their phone number.
And So what I want to do now is switch gears into the student experience, and so we're just doing eksperyans. The most important thing we want the parents to know is that we have a clustered learning model like framework if you will, that the division of student life uses to govern how we plan for our students and college developmental theories that really help us shape what we're trying to accomplish with each of the cohorts. And so you see how we have clustered learning advocacy and support for students.
So we have two types of clusters in the division of student life. The first cluster is the Cold War support and so as you all know and you may have already been in contact, your freshman students are with the Dean of the first year experience right now. And So what actually happens once they are completed in their freshman year, they actually move on to an undergraduate class theme. Who takes them from their software here all the way to graduation, so they have a point of contact for each student.
In their Cold War from the summer here all the way to the end, so the whole works of court is basically that Class D who follows the class.
And then the second piece we have is the residential clustering. I'm sure you all are aware of freshman Hill. I'm sure you're aware of where the students are residentially place, and so the residential clustering piece is extremely important as well. We try to make sure that the students are paired with those who they have the same planning with the same cohort. We try to make sure that those students have like minded individuals that they can create that cohort affinity with, and so the ideal behind residential clustering.
Is this gives our assistant, Deans and associate Deans chance to connect with the students on a level of intentional interactions, and so the residential calls are also a place where we do a lot of the safety concerns we have. Our public safety team. We have our themes on duty, 24 hours are students have access to our mental health and Wellness in the hotline. So these are all touchpoints and data points for us to make sure that our students are receiving the level of programmatic needs, the level of essential needs, academic needs, and so forth, and so really looking at the whole.
Uh, well being of the student, This is why we program in the way that we do, so that the students always have a content of support. So when we look at what the summer term offers in conjunction with what a student would receive in the following spring, these are the services that are offered to students. This is just a snapshot of services. I must say, it is definitely way more than this because the idea is that the summer is a functional semester, just like the following spring. So the first thing you'll see there we have the RPI counseling center.
And then we have our Center for crude effect in professional development, public safety, a lack. A nail actually stands for advising and learning assisted center. We are very prone to using our acronyms Here at the Institute, but that is our tutoring that is on campus as well as a multitude of other things from a black. Our regular union in our Mueller Center is where our students do a lot of their student organizations. Do government in leadership soon activities.
A lot of the intramural sports are recreation things of that nature, and then we also have our dining halls and meal plans which have been expanded and grown to a support. What the students need during their time on campus in that summer term. And then the last thing is our undergraduate class. Seems that's what I talked about in the previous slide where we talk about that coalport support for all of the students that are in that summer term. An really focused on giving them that attention that they need. And so, as far as the summer term is concerned.
This is conceptually what you can look forward to, seeing as far as what the planning look like looks like. For students, the different activities that we offered to students, and so the most important part that I think we need to discuss at this time is the academic things that take place in the summer term as well as the academic preparations. So what I'd like to do is turn it over to Doctor Powell who's going to give us a look at what are some term academics looks like and then she'll.
Take us into planning for the semester away.
Awesome, so we just kind of jump right into taking a look at this academic planning peace and this is just a sample of what a summer schedule might actually be full for your student. I want to start by saying that prior to this planning period, students have met with their advisor. They've met with their hubs. They had conversations about what courses would be available for them for the summer, but also taking a very close look at the trajectory from the beginning of their time.
Who are the very end? So it's important to note that the planning for the summer is intentionally plans is intentionally position so that students are actually on track to graduate in four years. That's really important to notes, and so this is just an example of what the schedule looks like. As mentioned about this clustered learning experience, students are using the entire summer as a full time learning experience for that, so they are on campus. They're taking courses every day as you see, this is a full.
Or schedule and so this is a sample of what a student may actually have on their plate, and it's very individualized. We really want to make that make that number. That's a very individualized experience, so the hubs are very supportive in this factor. With Amy closely with students, they have conversations with them. They're disgusting, not only just their planning their program planning, but they are also discussing this where they may be some gas and things that need to be filled in. And if you notice that there is a common lunch period, that's.
Every every day it is a common time and then we have a Wednesday. Would notice that there are no classes there for the most part yes, but by the opportunities for students to work directly with faculty to participate in some academic field trips, there are also some Co curricular things that may be happening on the Wednesday on as well. Of course even ask the court the classes are in session where they may have those opportunities as well, and so it is a very full time for our students. They are, they're busy for them in the morning that afternoon.
And it is quite rigorous. One of the other things we want to know is that it is accelerating in that it is 12 weeks courses that are offered. They have also some six week and I want to just say that there were already some six week courses that will already offered by the institution and students are able to take that invested into their program. But for the most part of our art courses or 12 week in nature. And so it is a little bit short and as compared to a regular semester. And that's where the acceleration of the program really competitively.
OK, and so know that this is something that individualized in this meeting with their academic support individuals with the hubs are there in 500 and you're having these conversations early, so they now waiting until right now. At this point, they already know, like your students already kind of getting some idea of what they might be taking when it's time for them to go into their junior year, but right now to join their sophomore year. They really haven't even more intense conversation, so they're not leaving anything.
The out there making sure that they are covering things as necessary. So we want to just to give the overview of what sooner I see. And as we mentioned, it is very individualized and their support for those as we need those point forward.
So that's that's been a couple of moments talking to talking about planning for the semester away, which is another integral part of the arch experience. Until Boston's are here on campus during the summer, they have already begun thinking about what there's fall or their spring semester wool consists of, and so there's a few options. And then I'm going to just go over through those for you. One of the things I want to start with is that all of the experience are described as an Ile or individual learning experience, and so once again, there's another acronym for you, and so we need to be calling this.
All these friends I only because they are intentional and they provide experimental learning experiences for all of our students. It also gives them an opportunity to be so discovering they can just think about things that they want to do, things that they can do that expand themselves professionally, but also just personally. And so this is a great opportunity that are afforded our students. So you'll notice that the prefix of each one of these experiences has the acronym. I only in front of them, and so I'm just going to just talk a little bit about each one of them, just briefly.
So in your eye only coop. This is an opportunity where students are working directly with our career Counseling Center, which you'll hear from Mr moves in a moment. But this is an experience with students are having a 6 to 8 months kind of experiences to be extended, so usually kind of combines a semester in the summer term, usually in social. Here even more details about that, but this is where students are very intentional about awarded to work with some employers that want them to be there and what's nice about these coop experience is that it really a lot of times these experiences and translate into two jobs for students. And of course that's the goal right when I supposed to be employed.
At the end of their college experience. But that is one option. The other is, and I only internship, which is also a work experience, but it's semester long for the most part, and I think that there may be some variations with that, but most part is for the entire semester as opposed to the Co op which had been woman extension to that. But I only international experiences where with the things about study abroad and this may have opportunities to go outside of the less. We have affiliate and not affiliate programs, and in under these experiences students are paying tuition.
Super clear and there is a lot of their credit to be transferred back to the institution, but it's a whole process that is actually facilitate to a whole office that deals exclusively with international experiences. And if a student is interested in this opportunity, they will need to work very early. This is something that you have to kind of have a sense of early on and not wait until the summer time to think about that. So it's going to be really important and so there is the office of international programs that focuses on this particular experience. On the I only research, this is where we are helping students and.
Create some research opportunities that take them off campus and so there, coming in collaboration with our director about VP. Excuse me of research students learn our cities that they can collaborate with courage faculty that also have partnerships with researchers off campus and so students are encouraged to begin to think about that. If that is an option. But so it's what the hell to prepare students for an IO researcher really encouraging our sophomores to really take advantage of our undergraduate research program, and that is an opportunity for them to work with faculty.
On campus as a sophomore, while they're taking their courses and this helps to prepare them get their mind readies with a sense of what the research requires and how they can extend their skills, having that opportunity is going to make them more marketable to some of our other larger research laboratories and other organizations beyond the campus and so some of our students work with other colleges. Other institutions of the researchers in other locations beyond the wrestler campus is as important for us to realize that this is an opportunity in order to prepare for that.
The sophomore year is a great opportunity every time to really prepare for the iot civic engagement. This is an opportunity once again for students to volunteer and to do some meta terrian work. If you wish you know, so maybe work with like habitat for Humanity's Red Cross, things of that nature. But there's also some local organizations that are not for profit, where students can volunteer and they are working to learn some viable skills in that particular experiences. So that's another option.
The next is the study of nothingness institution. Some soon as choose to be able to take some courses, sometimes for transfer credit, and if that's the case, we encourage them to talk to reference in their hubs to make sure that they're having conversations with their advisors to see if it's the sole particular courses. Archery as far. But then there are other students would just take it for pure enrichment, and that's OK too. Sometimes you want to take a course somewhere else or Community College if you're going to go home and work with the institution there. And so as soon as would follow whatever those guidelines also that institution.
Or connecting to their connecting at the non matriculate eed student. That's important to know on the left is the Ionia Self designed. And this is, uh, open opportunities as soon as to make an away experience. Whatever it is, they would like it to be. We encourage students to think about their interests, to think about the areas in which they can apply their skills and knowledge in ways that are practical.
And many students have created all types of plans, but a very interesting that allow him to develop apps. They develop small startups, they explore languages, they do a variety of things and so this is really an open platform for students, not only design experiences individualized for them, but it can also combine a few of the other opportunities. Let's just say, if a student has a short internship that doesn't meet the full criteria of an internship, excuse me doesn't quite meet the criteria with full internship.
They can use a portion of that experience and put it into a self design and combine that with something else that is meeting their interest but also helping to expand their educational and professional goals.
Kind of moving forward in terms of one really cool you would connect with with these opportunities. So at the office of undergraduate education covers research opportunities that Yeah, but nothing was institution and this self designs more entrepreneurial ideas I mentioned by the start or something like that. So the office of undergraduate education is my office and that's where I work directly with students who have selected in one of those three experiences. The international experience is going to connect with the office of international programs.
And they will help to facilitate that process. I want to reiterate, once again, if your student is interested in that experience is going to be really important to connect with the office of international programs very early, beginning to start probing, asking questions. The final with those type of programs are available to them so that they are on top of those deadlines because they do have strict deadlines and the last one that I just talked about here momentarily would be the internships in co-ops and civic engagements, those two opportunities will connect directly to the CCPD.
And they will help. This will be prepared to get all their paperwork in order. Also suggest giving them an outline of the various jobs that are available to them. Is that office is going to be extremely resourceful for our students.
But the little ones that connect directly with the office of undergraduate education here is the email my office is in the Walker Building and I am very responsive to those emails. Or feel free to send an email to let me know if you have any questions or concerns that I can answer directly. I'm going to now turn it over to the rest of the group who was from CCD will give us an overview of our next set of opportunity.
Alright, thank you doctor Powell and director folder. I am excited to share with you all a little bit tonight about the Center for career and professional development and the role that we play in Arch. You've already seen, I think a little bit about how our Department is integrated into this program and I should tell you that we are very furry believers of experiential learning for an undergraduate student. It is just.
Absolutely the best way for them to be prepared for life after college and not just with identifying positions that exist out there, but how to navigate your own career in the organization that you choose.
To give you an example, you know we have partnerships with a number of different organizations, but any student that does a Co op or an internship, but particularly a Co op is most likely going to receive a offer letter for employment upon graduation and approximately 85% of the students who participate in Coop program to qualify, for example, get offer letter before their experiences over. And if you think about.

Hi Suyash, yes, this webinar is being recorded and will be emailed to everyone who registered.
When this is happening in a students College Careeer, this is critical for them to already have an opportunity upon graduation. It really helps him come back to class and focus on their academics, knowing that they've got that opportunity secure. So how do we do that in the CPD? How do we make all of that happen for your student? Well, the first thing comes with the structure of our office. I think it's important to know that we have an entire team that is student facing only. That is our career development team.
So these are folks that work with your students every day. They are assigned by college. So if your student is mechanical engineering major then they work with that same career counselor their entire for years on campus. And that's a big deal because the students life will change dramatically.
On the first day they step on the RBI's campus until they graduate. Having someone that knows those dreams. Those career aspiration zan is able to help you navigate to be successful in reaching those every year in that same person that is critical to establishing the relationships that we want with your students.
The second team that I'd like to talk about is the employer relations team. So these are folks that are completely externally focused. They develop the opportunities with companies, they are the ones that manage those relationships, provide the opportunities that are job link portal, and also they take direction from the career development team on what majors need more opportunities. So we've heard in the past. Oh my goodness, there's no foller spring internships available, and that that's just simply not true.
To give you an example, over half of this year's Arch Course, our class participated in an internship or Co op in fall and spring, so we had 225 of them in this ball, and 290 of them this this frame. So yes, those opportunities exist out there, and the employer relations team job is to go file. Now, what happens when your student secures that opportunity while they work with the experience of learning team? So these are the folks that handle there.
Paperwork make sure that we're capturing their information correctly and are able to monitor them during their work assignment. They also are enrolled in a non credit bearing LMS course and that protects them from student loans becoming do if their own assignment for longer than six months. It keeps them registered with the institution and that experiential learning team manage is all of that. You could imagine right now as we've got approximately 40 students across the world.
Outside of North America doing internships and Co. OPS and we have this lovely Corona virus affecting everyone, it's important that those students are in a class that Stuttered back to the institution so we can communicate with them only in everyday basis. In a world where we don't have Corona virus running rampant, we use that course to communicate things to them, they reported for their assignment but also allow them to communicate back to us, their experience making sure that.
You know there there being treated appropriately.
When we think about how we're preparing your students to take advantage of their arch semester, one of the things that we offer is the arch preparatory course. It is called Argex ploration planning, and it's exactly that our goal in this course is to deliver career service related material to your student in the time frame that they can actually do something with it. So if you think about their sophomore year on the slide, that director filter showed you earlier.
The sophomore year was highlighted in red, and that's because it's an important important year for our students. In either the fall or spring of their sophomore year, they'll take this course in it that they are divided up by colleges so they get somewhat customized instruction for their industries. But what's important is that they learn the basics of how to create a resume and keep it a living document. So every time they complete a course project, they do an internship. They know to update that resume, so it's just.
Perfect is possible when they return home and are hanging out with you all and your friends. There might be an opportunity that comes up where someone says hey, I love to have you as an intern next year. Why don't you send me your resume? That's a perfect example of why a student needs to have these documents on hand and feel confident in them if lives only going to give you so many of those opportunities for someone's asking, How can I help you so we want them to be prepared for that. It is also something that.
Sometimes students don't know they need all of these things. All students are automatically registered for the course as a result, so if they're in the arch cohort, they will be registered in the spring automatically. If they did not self register in the fall. So when they get into the course and they start to learn these things, it really does accelerate their ability to secure an opportunity. Now, where are they going? What where our students going on these opportunities? Well, they're going all over the world.
Uh, some advice we have for the students is to take it seriously. You know this isn't is in a situation where Phillip has a drawer that I can open up in hand. You your internship, you need to play a part in this process. The first step is letting us know what you might want to do and that takes communicating with our development team. So when you do that and you explain, hey, this is what I want to do. This is kind of the area I want to go into. Our team knows what opportunities to go look.
Or on your behalf. Also they know what opportunities to prepare you for. Are there things you could be doing right now, like attending a career fair even though you're not trying to get an opportunity at the moment, just experiencing events like that when there's not pressure on you. That is the time we recommend they do that. So of course you've heard of NASA and BMW and the Humane Society and most likely Northrop Gruman Inbios. If you haven't heard of BIOS, you probably heard of Bermuda.
That's where that's located, so you can see it. Pretty much any top to your company that exists is going to recruit RPI Talite. We're known for producing incredible students who really facilitate businesses goals and plans when they come as interns in co-ops, so we don't have any issue with top tier employers. Everything from Fortune 100 companies to reach it all.
A robust corporations to startups, whatever your student is interested in doing, we will find away to get them in front of an opportunity. We also have an interview sweet that is owned campus. So when employers you know when we're not under warranty, employers show up to campus. We help facilitate that. We introduce them to the students in a very informal way and then they get the opportunity to actually meet with them.
Face to face, that usually leads to on campus interviews and we facilitate all of that, so those are the things to keep in mind. There are plenty of opportunities your student just needs to really focus on making their sophomore year one where they are doing what they need to do to secure those for junior status.
We're always happy to help. That's right, that's what we get paid to do. There is no requirement for an RPI student to ever walk into our office. However, we encourage that and we encourage it often and early. So please come see us and let us know how we can help you and I think at this time I'm going to turn this back over to direct air filter and will be glad to answer some of your questions.

Is clustering done at the fraternity houses?
Yes, so we uhm. Thank you, director Bruce. So we're going to take a look at some of the questions that we've had come in overtime. We want to make sure that we hold all the questions until the is so we can try to get through as many of them as possible to make sure that we are assisting you all in your planning. So I'm going to go ahead and start and it looks like we have a question here about the.
Clustered learning and living. As far as the students are when they are on campus for the summer term. So as clustered done at the fraternity houses. And that answer is no. So all students will be moving on campus for their arch summer term and so that is done when they're in the sophomore year and getting ready to go into that summer term. So what actually happens is most of our students are already in their sophomore housing and the arch.
A designated housing and so most of our students will be living on in those residential spaces prior to the our summer term, and they'll be able to stay where they are during the are some return. But as far as sororities and fraternities are concerned, once we get to that arch summer, those students will be coming back to campus and not residing in the fraternity and sorority houses.

Are the field trips organized by RPI?
So, uh, we have another question about, uh, the field trips. So the question is, are field are the field trips organized by RPI? And that answer is yes, so I'll talk a little bit about the student life, ones and doctor Powell can give us a little bit inside about the academic field trips that take place. So the student life trips that take place for students are very much Co curricular in nature to where we take the students, sometimes down to New York City or.
If there is a play, some of you may be familiar with, like mass moca or SPAC Saratoga Performing Arts Center. We also have our stooping union who organizes a lot of trips, a lot of Hope, Curricular activities, so each and every activity is organized by the Institute and students participate at no cost. If there is a cost associated in those Co curricular trips, the students are notified ahead of time so that they can.
Planned for it if they have to have costs covered for individual things, but most of the time we will all the time. Actually take care of the buses. We take care of, you know if it's a larger number of students we take care of that transportation piece. We also want to note that some of our students actually do some tricks together just to downtown Troy. Or if you're together, they may go to the different places like the atar on deck. So a lot of our students are free to do whatever they'd like to do in their spare time during that summer term.
So when the academic field trip, that's a little different in Doctor P can explain that one. Yeah, so with academic field trips, those are actually organized by the various schools. School science has loudly, they put together some chips that are appropriate to meet some extended learning opportunities for their students, but also just to give to his exposure. And it also helps to strengthen the student faculty engagement. So faculty are very intentional about put those things together. They are also free of charge that a student.
Need to make people travel by bus if they're going at some distance, and so that's already pre organized with the office of undergraduate education. So just know that they are facilitated and also they do other opportunities that are around academic enrichment but also just community building. And sometimes they do sort of like barbecues on campus and things like that. But anything that takes them off campus is usually connected to an extended experiential learning opportunity for the students and many students do enjoy participating in photos.

How does the process differ for early arch students?
OK, great, thank you Doctor P. So the next question we have is about how does this process differ for the early art students, and I think that's a great question in the biggest difference for any student who participates in early arch is that they have a lot more flexibility in regard to their planning and for their semester away. So typically a student does their semester away after they been on campus for two years and so for their early our students. That the difference is that they are able to do their semester away.
In the three years, so if you're a freshman student and you're doing you're on campus, your summer term right after your freshman year, then that gives you about six more semesters or five to really kind of figure out when you'd like to go on your semester way, and so it's a little bit more flexibility for those students in regards to that sort of preparation. And the reason why we have that in places, because, again, we have some freshmen who come into our Institute with a.
Advance load of credits. You know some students coming with 20 AP credits, 30 AP credits, some students coming with 15, you know. So we like to give them the best opportunity to have their coursework completed in the summer term. But they also have those those courses available during their summer term. But then also there semester away. Let's say there in their freshman year and they do. There are summer term they don't have to go away until their regular junior year.
Or they can go away as soon as they secured something, so there's a little bit more flexibility for any student who's doing early art.
It looks like Dylan Ross also had a question about the prep course in regards to the early art students. So because the early our students are essentially doing the arch early, the prep course actually does not begin until the sophomore year. But what we do afford those students who are early arch is that we have them connect with our Career Center at the start of the summer term to really kind of get that crash course into. What are some of the resources that.

Would this presentation be shared after the webinar
You know the course is taught for the sophomores, but how can I be accelerated in learning some of that material? So ideally we want to make sure that whatever the students have received in the sophomore year, any early our student will receive the exact amount of preparation and that the idea behind what we want to do with that. So the next question that we want to answer, hold on, let me go back to the page.
Uh, yes, so this question is about the web and RI believe, and with this presentation be shared after the webinar, yes, so you can go on the art website at anytime. We actually have two previous webinar webinars that we've done with our wonderful office of undergraduate admissions where we upload the link to the art website and so you can go on and do those older links now. But at the conclusion of this web, web and R.

how do you register for the prep course?
We will have that available for you all starting early as a Monday of next week, so we have to get some time to get it all figured out. The links ready. And yes, anyone who needs to view this webinar after this time period, you most definitely will be half that resource available to you. OK, our next question. How do you register for the course? Yeah, so as JD mentioned, this is something that we offer at the sophomore gear level. The students.
Are able to self register for the arch prep course during normal fall registration times. It is a non credit course and it's offered online so there's not a seat capacity so all students who want to take it in the fall are able to do it. We really recommend that for students that are going to be doing their fallaway semester, they take it in the fall of their sophomore year if their spring away doing it in the spring of their sophomore year.
Uh is the best way to go now. In either situation, the skills they're going to learn are going to be applicable across their lifetime, so it doesn't really matter which section there in, whether it's fall or spring. But if the students do not self register in the fall, the registrar automatically registers them in the spring.
That's how we are able to capture all of them, and it is a required course to graduate, even though it doesn't cost them anything and it doesn't have credit.

How soon can the students start designing/structuring their Arch experiences (especially if they are in the self-designed, à la carte variety?)
Thank you, Mr. Bruce and our next question. How soon can the students start designing structuring their art experiences, especially if they are in the self designed Ala carte variety? Well, that's an excellent question and I would say start now start is really as possible to start considering what the various options may include. Actually have students that contact me come and sit with me and begin to share their ideas very early on. So I have a sooner right now that's a freshman.
Student that had said OK, here's what I'm thinking about for my semester away in the student is not going to be early. Or is she going to be playing for the junie here? But it's already beginning to think about his plan actually is looking to do a individually individualize planned SLS design. So this is great. So I would say the sooner the better and one of the things that we've actually done to assist students with thinking about a cell design plan is that included in the arch preparatory course. There is an opportunity that food is life.
Thinking about if you had to self designed your plan, what would it be? And so that was so. In collaboration with CCPD work to say OK, we want to be able to help us to be proactive with that option. We know that there in an ideal world you want the maybe the internship or actually want to do some other kind of a maybe once every engagement whatever. Maybe you have some other thoughts, but one of the things is important is one to think early and to think a variety of options that are possible. And in doing that we want students to consider the fact that they can be.
Of the self design as a viable option for themselves, and so we wanted to think very early about this. So so finalize that the sooner the better.

What percentages of kids take the various programs, eg internship, volunteer, international?
OK, thank you. Doctor P and so the next question what percent of the kids take various programs internships volunteer international so you want to have a sense of what those what that looks like for our students. Sure, Mr Crucible tackle that one and we see that you have some other ones out burger. So I think we'll just have people just kind of tackle. Whatever I'm just going to go ahead and answer. Most of these for you so for the breakdown of what buckets if you will, the students decide to choose.
Uh, for my areas it's roughly 52 to 54% of the semester. Students are doing internships in co-ops, right? So if we have a situation where there's 480 students in the fault code for 249 of them are doing internships in co-ops in civic engagement, as far as your question regarding.

what is the typical earning/salary earned by interns of the program?
What is the typical earnings salary? Uh, for interns that is across the board it it really is determined by the geographic location and the industry of the students choice. Let me give you an example. If you are working for IBM in downtown Manhattan, you are going to get $35 an hour, most likely a housing allowance if not provided housing, and you know that's not going to go very far in downtown New York. If you are in.
You know, a rural portion of of New York, like upstate, you're not going to get $35 an hour. You're going to get more likely 25, and you're probably not going to get a housing stipend, so it really just depends on the geographic area and the industry. So if you're in engineering, the average is going to be somewhere between 25 and $35 an hour if you are.
Unique biomedical engineering student you could command upwards of $40.00 an hour. I have certainly signed off on co-ops nature and ships where the students are making more per hour than I do, and that is a awesome feeling for the student, and somewhat disheartening for me. But we love to see it, right? So in terms of how much they're making, it is completely dependent on weather going at what their industry is as far as how, let's see.

How would a student set up an opportunity for a co-op with a company with which RPI does NOT have an existing relationship? Is this common and generally successful?
Alright, so how would a student is set up an opportunity for Co op with a company with which RPI does not have an existing relationship? Is this common and generally successful? Yes, students are encouraged to find opportunities from every angle they can.
PPD provides a structured environment for them to find these opportunities and engage with the companies that bio's company that you saw the logo for. On one of my slides, that was actually a company that does research in Bermuda that we did not have a partnership with. But when the student came to us and explain they wanted to do research and they wanted it to be international that told our employee relations team OK, these are the kind of things we need to go after they found the opportunity.
The career development team work with the student to prepare their application and they were successful in getting that opportunity. As a result. Bioses now said We want RPI students every semester, so that kind of gets to what I was describing about where is the company is not having a recruitment relationship with RPI right now.
We are able to work with them and make sure that they know how that contact that company, how to interact with them, and how best to engage them. Most of the time that looks like our employer relations team going after those opportunities and then letting the student no. We've got him in place. Now let's get you prepared for it.

What are the prospects for internships and co-ops for smaller majors (like various HASS majors)? Do students in these programs often have a harder time finding opportunities for arch?
The next question on is what are the prospects for internships in co-ops for smaller majors, like various has majors, do students in these programs often have a harder time finding opportunities for arch? That's a great question, and you know to be honest with you, we do have students who have a very narrow focus with their career goals and the more narrow that focuses, sometimes the more difficult it is to find this specific opportunity at the internship or Co op level.
So what we try to do is obviously get the students opportunity that they really want to make sure they're prepared for it, and you're good to go when that doesn't happen. What we try to do is find opportunities that would deliver a skillset experience very similar to the one that they want after college, and the goal there is to give them that work. Life experience, help them adjust to an office environment or whatever industry environment they're going into, and make sure that they are competitive as a candidate when they do graduate for that specific opportunity.

will the ccpd team be available remotely this semester
The last one that I have here is will the CPD team be available remotely this semester? You bet we will be Joseph. We are Joshua. Sorry we're gonna be there and we will be posting on our website next Monday, exactly how students can access our services. But one of the goals that I had when I was recruited to come to RPI was to make sure that all of our services are delivered.
Uh online and in a virtual environment that's just where students are in these days and we need to be delivering our services to that medium so we had already had some things in the works. The virus kind of pushed ahead a little faster, but yes. We will be ready and willing in a virtual environment to help all of the students. Thank you. Mr grew so I'm trying to get them all grouped into the areas where you're asking the questions for the for the different directors, so that they can answer them all in one sitting so for Doctor P we have one.

are there special requirements for international study
I'm about international study. Are there special requirements for international study? The answer is yes and This is why it's going to be really important to connect with the international programs office to discuss with the art directors there as to how that both with those particular requirements are. I will definitely say that there was a cost attached to those international programs because they are affiliated. Non affiliate programs is also going to be some conversations with various advisers and hugs and hugs assistance to be able to know how those courses will be transferred.

What are the requirements for early arch? Can a Freshman student still apply for early arch for this summer?
Into the Institute of access to this program of study. So definitely their deadlines, and they're very individual. So the first thing would be to connect with that office by the website on their links there to take you directly to those individuals who are responsible, and then add here those deadlines, because that's going to be really important. Yes, thank you, Doctor P. I'm going to answer the one from Laura. It looks like what are the requirements for early ours came? Freshman student still apply over early March this.
Summer, so actually Laura are early bird students apply along with the the students who are going into the summer term and that actually wrapped up for us last week. The students started their summer registration beginning March 2nd and so all of our students who completed who are completing early artist for this summer term. They started their application process in January and that was all the way up until March. So all those students have been identified at this time.

What are the additional costs (i.e. housing for the semester away/working/participating in research)?
Presented with Arch. I'm not sure if you were just trying to make sure that you got the presentation, so I just want to make sure that I acknowledged you because I know you wrote that question a little bit earlier on OK and so the next one that I want to make sure that I address is the additional costs. And it looks like this from mark. What are the additional costs like housing, semester, away working, participating in research etc. So that one is a little bit that's actually three fold. Three of us can tackle it.
So I'm gonna start first with the housing and the so we have housing so Mr. Bruce will do semester way, and working and that people do research so with the housing the housing is associated students are required to live on campus for their two freshmen and sophomore year and there are summer term. So basically all of the tuition that is encouraged during the freshman year and sophomore year. You can expect that those tuition rates will look exactly.
The same or very similar in regards to that those 12 weeks. So in terms of costs, it actually is in regard to what the students will be doing on campus that summer, so their housing is one cost. Well, basically the residential tuition, but they you know they also have their meal plan as well, and so they have a different plans like the flex dollars they have the different meal options for the students. So as far as additional costs there, I would say that you want to plan according to what the student is in curing in terms of costs for the freshman year in for the software.
That will give you a good chance to gauge what the summer term planning should look like, and I think that those actual numbers become available each year prior to the summer term, so those you can definitely lookout for on the website and your student also has there SIS account where they can look at their student bills and anything associated with arch designated term two other plug that will add is that our versus are is very cognizant of the date for bills and so that students are usually built on April 1st.
For their summer term, and so that's a good day to keep in mind. And so, as we noted earlier in the presentation about financial planning from our director of financial aid, we definitely want to make sure that you guys get those questions answered there as well.
Well, alright then we had two other pieces, right? Yeah, go ahead Doctor P so I'll just speak to I think it was a question around research. Yeah it was awesome and there is no cost because if you think of our research is encouraged. As I mentioned earlier for sophomores, doing the undergraduate research program. So that's something that would happen prior to the beginning P arch that they have two options and they will do that. Join join this semester is like the following spring semester the ******* apply for it and then you can soon as can receive Friday.
Or they can receive payments and they work part time. If you're getting the working part time, you actually get money, so you're not spending actually getting, so that's great. And so I think it said of a minimum wage rate and it's worked out by the apartment is how many hours and so forth I think is no more than 12, I think per week that they're allowed to work in that they are in classes. But that's another option for many. Preparing for research. And in during the summer during the arch summer there is no research that students are allowed to have because as I shared what there.
Course schedule consists of. There really is no time to work at any other point to have full time or any other part time work during the summer, so they're focusing all of their attention.
On their studies, but there's definitely no additional cost to pay.
Doing it during the summer, yeah, so a lot of, well, 99% of the intern ships in Co. OPS that our students participate in our paid experiences from my area is right. So when it comes to additional costs that is really dependent on what the student decides they want to do. If they want to work for a nonprofit, feeding the homeless in San Francisco, then there's probably some additional costs for them to participate in that.
However, if they want to work for a startup in Silicon Valley, that position is going to pay them enough money that it should take care of all of their living expenses and things of that nature. But again, I want to reinforce that if a student comes in their freshman year and they start to develop that relationship with their career counselor, we're going to know what they need and what opportunities they need to be looking for. So if they say, you know I have never been to the West Coast, I think I might like to go there.

Are the summer ARCH field trips mandatory?
Well, OK, let's do you have a place to stay in place to live? Those are the kind of conversations that we're gonna have before we even engage with finding the employer that they want to work for, and that's kind of how we approach that. It really is a case by case basis, so send your student in the tacos and our last question for the evening is are the summer arts field trips academic? I'm assuming academic or just in general field trips mandatory about there being no one said there mandatory, but they are strongly encouraged.
That makes this opportunity to meet each other and to work directly with their faculty and just look for community building in extended experiential learning opportunities. So it is now 7:00 PM and we want to thank all of you who joined us for tonight's webinar. Remember that this webinar will be available for view beginning next week. Will have the link available on the arch website if you have any additional questions for Doctor Powell you can.
Email or you eat at rpi.edu if you have any additional questions, let me just put up her information for Doctor Powell this is oh you eat rpi.edu. If you have any questions about our career, services or anything else that you'd like to ask in regards to career planning, make sure that your student visited visits the CPD an remotely that is also a good connect for us and so or myself it is the general VR chatrpi.edu.
That is, the arch at rpi.edu that is our general arch email that I can be reached at or anyone in the office of student transition. The Art Institute transitions and so at this time we like to thank you all for being with us and we will talk to you very, very soon. We look forward to seeing all of your students at ours discovery day on August 30th. Take care and have a good night. Thank you goodnight.
