1. Due to the intensity and progressive nature of our curriculum, students must attend all classes, laboratories, and scheduled tutorials, seminars, workshops and meetings unless excused by the Program Staff. All assignments are expected to be completed on time.
2. Students will attend breakfast, lunch and dinner with all program participants throughout the program. Student staff will knock on doors each morning by 6:30 a.m. so that they are ready to go to the dining hall on time.
3. Students are expected to be in their rooms for the night by 11 p.m.; this curfew will be strictly enforced so that students are rested for the next day. It is expected that all students honor quiet hours as outlined by staff. Daily study hours will be set aside as per staff discretion.
4. In order to safeguard the privacy and safety of the residents, students may not have visitors in their rooms. Students will be able to visit in the designated lounges in the buildings.
5. Modern kitchen facilities are available for use; it is expected that you clean up before leaving the kitchen area.
6. All Rensselaer facilities are open for student access except where restricted.
7. Students will not be able to leave campus during the week without written parental consent. If you must leave the campus for any reason, your parent or guardian must contact the Program Director at 518-276-3098 to arrange for pick-up on campus.
8. Students are responsible for the safe-keeping of their possessions, including money, computers and other electronics. If you are unable to bring your own computer, PREFACE will provide a loaner laptop for you to use throughout the program, which must be returned prior to leaving campus.
9. Students are required to follow all rules and regulations of the PREFACE Summer Program and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, including the Rensselaer Student Handbook. It is the student’s responsibility to attend to rule up-dates and notices posted on residence hall bulletin boards near the bathrooms or a staff member’s room door on each floor.
10. In accordance with New York State Law and Rensselaer policy, no alcoholic beverages or illegal substances will be allowed on campus. “Campus” refers to any property owned and operated by Rensselaer within Troy’s main campus. Further, these rules and regulations apply to any Summer Program sponsored event on – or off campus. If caught with any illegal substance or alcohol, disciplinary action will be taken. Summer program staff must be alerted to prescription medications to be taken during residence on campus.

12. Rensselaer is a smoke-free campus.
13. In accordance with New York State Law and Rensselaer policy as set forth in the Rensselaer Handbook of Student Rights and Responsibilities, the unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensing, possession, or use of alcohol is prohibited on Institute property or as part of any activity sanctioned or sponsored by the Institute, including the PREFACE Program. The legal drinking age in New York State is 21. Rensselaer has implemented a zero-tolerance drug policy which strictly prohibits: Possession, use, or facilitation of use of any “Prohibited Substances” or “Drug Paraphernalia” as defined herein; and Attempted or actual sale, manufacture, marketing, trafficking, or transfer of any Prohibited Substance, or Drug Paraphernalia. Prohibited Substances are any of the following for which the individual does not have a legal license or valid prescription: any illegal drug, controlled substance (as defined by State and Federal law), or substance, or manner of use, that is generally recognized as being detrimental or dangerous to the health, welfare or safety of individuals or the community, although not necessarily illegal (including but not limited to Molly, Spice, K-2, whippets, performance enhancing drugs, prescription drugs, and research drugs). Drug Paraphernalia is equipment, products, or materials primarily used for the purpose of making, using concealing, or distributing Prohibited Substances. If caught with any illegal substance or alcohol, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken
